Events calendar

Dates on the Events Calendar are slowly falling in to place; though the Mayflower Offshore Rowing Club website worringly seems to have disappeared - hopefully that is just a glitch and the bruiser that is the Eddystone is not in doubt. The date for the Kayak Essentials Swellies Extreme Race now looks like a weekend in July, possibly with an exciting new lung-busting format - details to follow soooon...

Tierra del Fuego

Justine Curgenven and Barry Shaw are determinedly making their way around T'd'F. Follow their latest progress on the Cackle TV blog and Map.

New Sponsor

Phil Clegg has very generously offered a prize for the 2012 Menai Challenge. A 2 day coaching course with his new venture Sea Kayaking Anglesey. Many thanks to Phil, but as I pointed out this won't get him out of adding his name to the rankings - good try Phil!

Done and Dusted

Well the Menai Challenge prize draw took place after the paddle on Sunday and I guess that means that the 2011 season is finally over and done with. The first run took place in June and it seems like it was non-stop early starts ever since. So many bridges! We had 36 paddlers take part before the end of the year, with a total of 62 times posted - not too bad to start with. (Though I know there were a few times that didn't see the light of day!) Full details of the prize draw here.

Thanks to : Aled Williams, Marcus Demuth, Pete Baars and (of course) Pascale for all their support.
2012 times are already being posted - don't be left out. Keep an eye out for the 'Level 5 Grudge Match League' too - coming soon!

Summit to Sea Paddle Sunday 12th Feb

Meet at the Summit to Sea shop 0900 for 0930. Group sea paddle in local area, venue to be confirmed. Weather shows cloud with 10mph NW winds. Should be fairly calm out there. Followed by Menai Challenge Prize Draw back at the shop after the paddle.

Crossing the Atlantic!

Not by kayak granted but a serious adventure all the same; Simon Osborne from Sea Kayaking Cornwall is currently mid-Atlantic rowing in 2 hour shifts with the TransAtlantik team - blog here.

Dodgy deals?

James S earned a reprieve and stays at the top of the Menai Challenge list. Aled had to paddle his V10S ski, so his time isn't eligible and Marcus took the 'Big Girl of the Year' award (first time it has been awarded so early in the year!) with his mid run change of plan to run the short course. Was James lucky or where there some behind the scenes dodgy deals? Have the Asian betting syndicates decided to target the Menai Challenge? And who's going to knock James from his perch?

Menai Challenge - The Element of Adventure

James Stevenson from Adventure Elements has taken the prize for the first paddler to post a time on the Advanced course in 2012. Hopefully with James taking the plunge it may tempt a few more of North Wales Level 5 coaches to venture from their lairs. I think what we need is a good old level 5 grudge match here!

Sea Kayaking Anglesey

Level 5 sea coach Phil Clegg has taken the plunge into the freelance coaching world, with his new business (and shiny new website) Sea Kayaking Anglesey. Phil is a well known and respected sea paddler with numerous accolades to his name including expeditions to Greenland, Madagascar and of course the big one, the record UK Circumnavigation. Sea Kayaking Anglesey is based a stone's throw from the water's edge in Menai Bridge; good luck to Phil with the new venture.

Isles of Scilly Crossing

Richard Sims has contacted me with details of his solo crossing to the Scillies (and return) last summer . Though I know many have made this crossing this is the first solo crossing claim I have received; his time of just over 4hrs justifies the place at the top of the board. Nice one.

Menai Challenge Prize Draw and Paddle

The prize draw for the 2011 Menai Challenge will take place at the Summit to Sea shop next Sunday, the 12th Feb. There will be an acccompanied paddle in the morning followed by the draw on our return. Meeting time for the 2-3 hr paddle paddle is 0900 at the shop, for an 0930 leave. Paddling venue will be weather dependent - Straits if things are bad otherwise a venue nearer the Holyhead end of Anglesey. Any last minute changes will be posted on the Performance Sea Kayak Gossip page, Summit to Sea blog/facebook page and on the UK Rivers Guide Book forum.
Everybody who submitted a time during 2011 or paddled the New Year's Eve paddle will be entered in the draw.

If you think you're 'ard enough...

Kayak Essentials have decided that the date for the 2012 Swellies Extreme Race will change from October to a slightly warmer (hopefully) May. I hear that the date is still to be confirmed though it looks as if it could be Saturday 5th May. For those of you who keep an eye on the Gossip page you will realise that this is the day before the Ravenglass Seaquest event. So it looks like the Swellies race as a warm-up and then a quick jaunt up the M6 to Ravenglass. Don't even mention that the Anglesey Symposium is on the same weekend too...
Note: Nick Cunliffe from Kayak Essentials has been in touch to say that he is aware of the potential clashes and will confirm the date soon.

More Wings

Perhaps you could argue a little vested interest here but... Rockpool Kayaks have expanded their range of wing paddles. They are now distributors for paddles from Epic, Legend, Braca and Zastera. Something to suit everyone!

The Essential Sea Kayak Festival

Those folks at Kayak Essentials have been at it again; Nick Cunliffe and Matt Giblin (Kayak Essentials), Ali Othen (Oswestry School) and Ulrika Larsson (Green Adventures) have all linked up to organise the Essential Sea Kayak Festival (20-20 October 2012). To quote the website: 'Featuring the best North Wales sea kayak coaches, workshops, training courses, guided trips and presentations in a world-class sea kayaking environment' - sounds like a good way to round off the season.

May could be a busy month...

The events are queuing up to take place in May: there is the 6th annual Ravenglass Seaquest (Sunday 6th May) which unfortunately clashes with the SKUK Anglesey Symposium (5th-7th May). The Anglesey Ocean Kayak Race returns for a second year (Sunday 20th May). I believe that Kayak Essentials may be trying to shoehorn the Swellies Extreme Race sometime into the spring for 2012 also. Phew... We might need a holiday come June.

Menai Challenge - The 2012 ball is rolling!

My spies on the bridge told me that there was a recent sneaky attempt on The Challenge. Steve Miles and Jim Bradley have come clean and are the first to add their times to the 2012 Ranking list. Steve was a little concerned that their time of 1:35 didn't better Pete's Chicken Suit Run, but then 2012 is a whole new year. Time to egg on a few others...

20th Jan 12

Menai Challenge Prize Draw - Correction

Sorry for the delay folks. The prize draw for the 2011 Menai Challenge will take place at Summit to Sea on Sunday February 12th. Pete runs an accompanied paddle in the local area on the second Sunday of each month, meeting at the shop at 09:00 for a 09:30 departure. The draw will take place after the paddle, back at the shop. Be there or be getting your prize through the post (at great expense to yours truly!)

Isle of Skye Circumnavigation

Will Herman has sent me the details of the 2011 Isle of Skye circumnavigation he completed with Tim Pearson. Will has made no claim that this is a record but as I've no details for any other attempts I've talked him into letting me add it to the Circumnav page - if you know of any other attempts then please let me know. You can read (and look) at Will's excellent blog here.

Midlifekayak

Another one I've been keeping an eye on is the GB360 boys - Geoff Carter, Mike Greenslade & Andy Mullins who are detailing the preparations for their 2012 UK Circumnav attempt on the Midlifekayak blog. One to follow.

'I've got to learn to kayak, and I must learn well'

Ash Holbrook and Andrew Parks (TEAM Jackal) have been added to the (potential) UK Circumnavigators page, planning to go in 2013. They sound like an ambitious pairing with an aim to complete the trip in 50 days (in a double). A key part of their preparations is Andrew learning to paddle first(!) and then they plan to take part in the 2012 Devizes - Westminster race as part of their groundwork. I look forward to watching their progress throughout. Good luck gents.

UK Circumnavigations page

A new addition to the PSK site is the section showing details of UK Circumnavigations and Circumnavigators - take a look at the menu panel on the left. This is still a work in progress and may contain mistakes and ommissions - please let me know if you spot any.

Oban Sea Kayak Race 2012

An email today from the Organisers of the Oban Sea Kayak Race - "We have arranged to bring the Oban Race forward a week to Saturday August 25th this year, which is the bank holiday weekend and should attract a bigger field." Add it to your diary!

St George's Channel Crossing

Rowland Woollven contacted me with details of of a crossing of the St. George's Channel (Irish Sea) back in 1996. 3 crews in Valley Aleut II's. Rowland points out that the time sets no records other than historical ones! But still an achievement to give you that warm fuzzy feeling and definitely worthy of an entry on the page.

Farne Island Loop

This one sounds a very interesting challenge, courtesy of Brian Turnbull and Ken Oliver. I haven't had time to add anything to the site yet but it will definitely earn a slot (and hopefully a trip over to that neck of woods). Basically a timed effort from Bamburgh beach out around all the island in the Farnes group and back to the beach - details to follow. I believe Brian and Ollie Jay (Active 4 Seasons) have been trading blows on this one. Sounds like a good challenge to slot in to the Coquet Island race weekend...

UK Circumnavigations

It look like 2012 could be a big year for attempts on the big one, with more than dozen names floating about. To match the interest a PSK UK Circumnavigations page is in the offing, a few more days fine tuning and things should 'go live' (apparently that is the term to use) - watch this space.

Menai Challenge Rankings - End of the year 2011

The final numbers were swollen by those that joined us for the New Year's Eve paddle; the final 2011 rankings are here. The fastest time of 2011 was set by Ian Tordoff from Chester Canoe Club in his Valley Rapier 20. Ian's time of 1:20:25 was fastest by a clear margin and set the challenge for 2012. The fastest lady was Pascale Eichenmuller paddling the Rockpool Taran. Pascale just pipped Justine Curgeneven by a minute or so, with a time of 1:39:01. Well done to all who paddled the Challenge in 2011. A perpetual trophy has been donated jointly for the fastest Man and Woman for each year, the trophy will reside in the 'snug' at the Summit to Sea shop. The long anticipated prize draw will take place sometime in January, hopefully - details to follow.

Who's first for 2012 then? Bring on the easterlies!

Ravenglass Seaquest 2012

The date for 6th Ravenglass Seaquest has been announced as Sunday 6th May. The Ravenglass Seaquest is an excellent event, if you have not been before then you should certainly add it to your diary - if you have been before then no doubt you already have it in your diary. More Info Here

Menai Straits Social Paddle - New Year's Eve

It seems to be morphing from a social paddle into more of a mini symposium (!)- so if you fancy telling Jimski of your new idea for his next guidebook, want to talk boat design with Aled, exchange tales of expedition paddling and derring do with Marcus, swap tales of the one that got away and talk kayak angling with CarpyKen, try to resist Pete Baars latest bargain patter, or just chat about social paddling (strange concept) with Seagull then you might want to join us on New Year's Eve. (If that's all too much then maybe you can join me at the back of the group to paddle grumpily for a couple of hours).

So come and work off that Turkey and Mince Pie feeling with a bimble trip from the Sea Zoo to the Gallow's Point followed by a pub lunch in Beaumaris. Start time 10:45 - fancy dress all round and no racing allowed! We'll run the opposite direction if there is an easterly blowing, starting a little later. All welcome, email so we know your coming. NO RACING!*

Fasteronline - Thule Roofbars

I managed to shear a bolt on the roof rack which made things a touch awkward for a day or two; as is the way with the modern world it looked like it would be an expensive remedy. But FasterOnline went the extra mile to source only the parts I needed - they did all the work, got the bits to me quickly and saved me a chunk of money - excellent service once again - if you need roofrack bits and pieces then these guys are definitely worth a look. http://www.fasteronline.co.uk/

A big thankyou to Matt and Nick at Kayak Essentials for donating one of their excellent sea kayak skills DVDs as a prize for the Menai Challenge.

Stop Press - The Queen meets Justine!

Justine Curgenven has recently returned from a trip to the Big Smoke for a date with Her Majesty. It sounds like an impressive evening and an excellent opportunity for name dropping! Read all about it on Justine's Blog. Justine was also lucky enough to meet up with further (kayaking) royalty in the form of the legendary Harry Whelan while she was down there - again details on the blog.

Crossing the Minch?

Will Herman (Blog) suggested it may be worth including The Minch within the crossing pages and I had to agree. The only problem was that I didn't have any names to include; so far nobody has made any claims on the Minch though I know numerous people have made the crossing. When Kate Duffus made the crossing to Skye in 2008 it was her first open crossing and her first solo paddle! She has allowed me to use her attempt as the first record to go on the page, if you know of any more then please let me know. If you want to see your name in lights than there are plenty of empty boxes to fill...

Car Vandals

Last night a car was seriously damaged by vandals whilst it was parked at the regular spot beneath the arches of Telford Bridge in Menai Bridge.

Menai Straits Social Paddle - New Year's Eve

If you are likely to be twiddling your thumbs in the North Wales area on New Year's Eve and need to mitigate that mince pie feeling then come and join us for the Straits Paddle. A bimble trip from the Sea Zoo to the Gallow's Point followed by a pub lunch in Beaumaris. Start time 10:45 - fancy dress all round and no racing allowed! We'll run the opposite direction if there is an easterly blowing, starting a little later. All welcome, email so we know your coming.

Hope you washed your hands!

A friend reminded me to keep an eye of Freya Hoffmeister's blog as she attempts to paddle around South America. The blog tells an impressive tale, warts and all - true Performance Sea Kayaking. Take a look - Freya's Blog and Trip Map

Menai Challenge - year end!

With less than a month to go time is tight to get a run in. So if you fancy a chance of winning 2 days coaching at Sea Kayaking Cornwall, a discount Rockpool Kayak, some kit from Summit to Sea or some Peak UK bits and pieces then you had better get your skates on. For those with big enough balls the largest tide of the month is on Boxing Day. Put it in your diary now and dodge the turkey leftovers! Menai Challenge

Expedition Skills DVD

Olly Sanders and Nige Robinson are soon to launch a DVD devoted to telling all that you need to know to set out on a multi-day or multi-week expedition. the Expedition SKills DVD is due out in January 2012 and a taster can be seen on YouTube - here.

Into the Wind - 8 Mile Cheese

Today the postman brought a copy of the 'Into the Wind' DVD which tells the tale of the 2011 record-breaking circumnavigation of Ireland by Jeff Allen and Harry Whelan (25 days). I had heard the tales of the terrible weather, copious amounts of Guiness and enormous mileages; I had even sat through one of Jeff's presentations, but I wanted to see it all with my own eyes. After all, you don't believe everything you here now do you?
Vaughan Roberts (Romany Productions) followed the guys around the Emerald Isle and made the film which tells the tale. Order a copy and watch the floating domestic unfold; it's an interesting journey to view and a proportion of each sale will be donated to Ovarion Cancer Action to boot.

Hmmm...

Training Partner No.2 sent me this one, rather impressive...

How long before Merhe rip it off?

Menai 11.1

Adam Harmer (2011 winner of the World's Longest Canoe Race - with Simon Coward) posted his first time for the Menai Challenge today. Unfortunately a start delay and a little uncertainty over the sneaky centre line mean that he will have to return to top the rankings - it's harder than it looks! A good run all the same, cheers Adam. (Good presentation on the Yukon race by the way.)

Sea Kayak Wales

An interesting project is taking form down in the deepest, darkest corner of the Island. The team at Anglesey Stick are working on an on-line trip planner for the North Wales coast. Sounds like a very useful and intriguing idea - Sea Kayak Wales

Rudders 'R' Us

Sea Kayaking UK have an interesting new boat on their website; described as 'a safe race trainer for the sea' the new Cadence Sea looks like it will be the fastest boat in the extensive SKUK fleet. An interesting development, I look forward to seeing it zipping along out on the water.

Yukon 1000

Back when the sun was out Adam Harmer and Simon Coward took part in the World's longest canoe race, the Yukon 1000 mile; they even beat the 'locals' into first place after 6 days of racing! On his return Adam even upped his game to take a convincing 5th place in the Swellies Extreme Race!!
Adam will be giving a presentation about his adventures (what is it about sea kayakers and bears?) on Saturday evening 26th Nov at Summit to Sea - 18:30 for 19:00 - bring something to sit on!

The Bat Cave

The Summit to Sea quest for Global Domination continues apace. The evil villain has even started broadcasting messages to his follower(s) from his hidden lair (cunningly disguised as a Fireplace Shop - extinct volcanoes are so passe don't you think?) - Crazy Pete's Kayak Shack. I did hear that there was talk of a chicken suit but I'm glad that he saw sense, though I'm not sure where he got the yeti suit.

Menai Challenge

The end of the Menai Challenge year is slowly drawing near and this weekend gives a decent tidal opportunity to post a time - don't miss it!
There is also talk of a social paddle along the course on New Year's Eve followed by a trip to a local watering hole, all to bring the paddling year to a close - book your place now! Fancy dress and no racing!

14th Nov 11

Apologies for the lack of updates, the Team Manager forced me to go on a holiday.

Summit to Sea goes Global!

The relentless quest for global domination continues as Summit to Sea (Anglesey's favourite kit supplier!) joins the e-commerce world with their new website - crack on and spend!

Anglesey Winter Training Starts

'Training' for the 2012 season started this evening in the Straits; a good start with one of those calm nights with fantastic bioluminescence. Join us for evening sessions in the Straits weekdays and venues a little further afield at the weekends. All are welcome - current faces include: Aled Williams, Marcus Demuth, Pete Baars, Pascale E. and your truly. It's a good chance to improve fitness over the winter, sharpen those skills or just to get out for a sociable paddle now and then - it might be just the thing if you have a shiny blue and kev/carb Rapier 18 sat in your back garden! Swellies Extreme Video

The Kayak Essentials boys have posted a nice little video showing the fun that was to be had on the recent Swellies Extreme Sea Kayak Race - a fun day out that must be pencilled in to the calendar for next year! Kayak Essentials website.KE Photos

Swellies Extreme Sea Kayak Race - Downstream Madness!

What a blast - challenging but good fun! The big tides, strong winds and a testing course layout made for an excellent event, plenty more smiling faces and tall tales to tell. The organisation was smooth and slick; thanks to Nick Cunliffe and Matt Giblin from Kayak Essentials for putting on a great event. PHOTOS

Tough at the Top

Ian Tordoff ventured across from Chester to take a run on the Menai Challenge. No surprise to see him move his Valley Rapier 20 into top place, by a good margin too! Aled Williams also put the new Tiderace Pace through it's paces and rather sneakily slotted in a few seconds ahead of Barry Shaw - could this be the start of a grudge match? Ooh - I do hope so! Only a few more big tides left people... Latest Rankings

The Bear Necessities - A reminder

Just a reminder that world renowned coach, climber and expedition paddler Olly Sanders will be giving a presentation on Saturday 29th October about his latest kayaking/climbing expedition to Greenland. Swellies Extreme Race - Last call!

From the Organisers:
"...Finally, we will accept on-the-day entries from competitors who can satisfy the entry requirements. We currently expect around 20 competitors on Saturday (29th Oct) - call your paddling buddies and get them down to Menai Bridge, 1130 on Saturday for a race to remember!" Kayak Essentials

Around Ireland 2011 - Presentation and Video

Part of the programme for Mark Tozer's 2011 Storm Gathering had Jeff Allen drawing in the crowds on Saturday evening. Jeff and Harry Whelan completed a record breaking circumnavigation of Ireland ealier in the year and Jeff's wrap-up presentation was interesting, entertaining, informative and refreshingly frank! 'Ard as nails those two!
Jeff and Harry hope to give further presentations at various venues in the future, well worth going along to.

Vaughan Roberts of Romany Productions also accompanied the guys during their adventures and is about to launch a DVD telling the tale - appropriately titled Into the Wind. Keep an eye out for it.

Can you guess what it is yet?

It was interesting to paddle alongside this new beast in the Straits last evening - can you guess what it is yet? Not available in pink apparently. I'm also looking forward to seeing the new offering from the other 'local' manufacturer...

Sneaky Survey?

A little bird tells me that Marcus Demuth was seen recently on a powered(!) survey vessel in the Straits. Is Marcus checking out the best route and favourable salinity conditions for his next attempt to top the Menai Challenge rankings? (It's getting late in the year now, not many more opportunites to grab a big spring!)

20th Oct 11

Kate in Tesco

Today I found myself paddling another run of the Menai Challenge, but this time I had the pleasure of paddling alongside the popular guidebook author and pie connoisseur Jim Krawiecki (blog). The low neap tide meant that the odds were against Jim topping the rankings (all the talking didn't help either) but he set a creditable time all the same. Don't worry Jim, what is said on the water stays on the water!

The Bear Necessities - Sea Kayaking and Climbing in Greenland

World renowned coach, climber and expedition paddler Olly Sanders will be giving a presentation on Saturday 29th October of his latest kayaking/climbing expedition to Greenland. Venue: Summit to Sea shop at Valley on Anglesey (LL65 3DP) - 18:30 for 19:00. Bring your own beer (or even bear).

Big Keith

A mention is deserved to Keith McGuirk (Irish WWR Team) for shuttling me around the outskirts of Dublin in order to get the Taran to the ferry after the Irish Sea Crossing. Keith saved me a lot of hassle and a very long walk, cheers Keith. Good luck for Bourg-St-Maurice World Championships 2012.

Shooter's Story

In May 2011 Elaine ‘Shooter’ Alexander embarked on the challenge to become the first woman from Northern Ireland to circumnavigate Ireland by kayak. The motivation for the trip was not only the 1000 mile journey but to raise much needed funds for the registered charity – Share Centre (SHARE).
After 71 gruelling days that saw her take on one of the stormiest summers in recent years, Elaine arrived back at Whitehead.

On Saturday 22nd October you can hear her story, see the equipment she used, ask questions and watch unique video footage and photos that made this trip so challenging and rewarding.

Swellies-Extreme Race

There's only just over a week to go now to the Swellies-Extreme Race (flyer here) and I hear there are still a few places left; so get your skates on and send an entry in - details on the Kayak Essentials website. It sounds like it should be a fun event, set on a world famous piece of water with the stunning backdrop of the Snowdonia Mountains - what else could you ask for?

New English Channel Record?

Paul Wycherley, a GB Team sprint racer has bettered the English Channel crossing record by taking half an hour off the previous time. The new record stands at an impressive 2 hrs and 28 mins. Paul paddled an Epic V12 ski (I believe) for his crossing. Though it has to be said, watching the video on the BBC webpage raised the odd eyebrow...

More Menai Challenge

Pascale Eichenmuller sneaked another run in today, making the most of the big springs. She managed to squeeze under the 1:40 mark (making Marcus D nervous on the way!) - those tidy lines made all the difference once again.

Dublin Bay Sea Kayak Race

Well I hear the weather gods were not favourable on the Dublin Bay race, the course was altered to allow for the F6 winds. Mick O'Meara (seapaddling.com) took first place in his new toy, a Taran. Mick's got an extensive winning pedigree and combined with a Taran that was used by Jeff Allen and Harry Whelan during their Around Ireland record this year - it made for a winning combination. Further results to follow.

More fast boats...

Can't say too much, but I hear a couple of UK sea kayak manufacturers are just about ready to launch new boat designs. They both look like fast sea kayak designs to me, it should be interestingt to hear the market reaction...

** Poole Harbour Race - Cancelled **

From Andy Coomes, PHCC Secretary:

Poole Harbour Race 2011 is cancelled for this year

The weather has it in for us. Sunday the 18th is a Force 5 gusting Force 6, better than the hurricane of the week before but still too much for racing boats and marquees. New dates for next year will be posted to the website page http://www.phcc.org.uk/activities/harbourrace.htm and also publicised on facebook. Search for “ Poole Harbour Canoe Club Race.”

Marcus and the Helicopter (or '4 reef breaks')

Recently we all headed over to Summit to Sea to hear Marcus Demuth give an interesting presentation on the trials and tribulations involved as he and Biff attempted to circumnavigate Tierra del Fuego. I had heard bits and pieces before but it was good to hear the full story (believe me, it was the full story) from the horses mouth so to speak. (It's amazing just what Dick Dastardly was prepared to go through to get his hands on a Valley Nordkapp.)

Dan the Man and the Horse's Ass

Dan Dooley came over from Chicago to become the first international paddler to undertake the Menai Challenge, also taking the opportunity for a little coaching and boat demos whilst he was here. Dan dodged the recent strong winds to post a creditable 1:37:50, even more impressive when you consider it was the furthest he had ever paddled (in his 3 month kayaking career!) It was a real pleasure paddling with Dan, one of the world's true gentlemen.

The truth will out

To the consternation of a few locals (and especially Marcus), Barry delivered the much anticipated GPS track as evidence for his ranking leading Menai Challenge run. The old guy can obviously deliver the goods when required! I can see things getting busy down there as the pogies come off and the big spring tides loom...

*** Races Cancelled / Postponed! ***

Due to impending bad weather the Fleetwood Seaquest has unfortunately been cancelled. The Poole Harbour race has been postponed with an intended alternative date of Sunday 18th September.

Thieving!

It's not hard to make me grumpy and let's face it too many things (and people) do it! But it does take a lot to make me really angry, one of those things is thieving. What gives any low life the right to help themselves to the property of others? During their attempt to circumnavigate Denmark it unfortunately seems as if the paths of Nick Cunliffe and Ulrika Larsson crossed with such despicable creatures. Apparently, just after leaving Copenhagen, Nick & Ulrikka left their kit briefly to shop for food, only to return to find most of it had been taken - details on Ulrikka's Blog. It is sad to hear of such things, not only for the loss of kit and the implications this has on the completion of the trip, but as Ulrika points out the loss of irreplaceable photos - devastating. On the positive side they plan to return after a short postponement...

UK Circumnavigations

...seem to be the in thing at the moment. Wherever you look it seems there is someone looking for boat advice, trip advice, willing partners or such like. I also know of a few who are quietly prepping behind the scenes too; if you add them all together I reckon there could be 5 or 6 groups (and/or individuals) setting off some time next year (with at least a couple more preparing for the year after!) It could be a busy year on the UK coastline and it should be interesting to follow the progress of the various attempts. Good luck and fair weather to all.

First winter sess?

I feel that the winter training starts about the same time as the sessions start in the dark. We're not quite there yet, another week or so and we'll be finishing in the dark. A few more after that and we'll be starting in the dark. But tonight the weather had an edge to it and I put my winter training cag on for the first time. The long dark nights are looming... (it was a good sess too by the way, the 'Youngster' can pull hard when he wants too!)

Peak UK sponsor the Menai Challenge!

Peak UK are a very welcome addition to list of prize sponsors for the Menai Challenge. Peak UK are manufacturers of world class paddling wear; their kit is used by top class paddlers across all the canoesport disciplines, and for good reason.

It's all in the detail...

A new spreadsheet table has been added to the Menai Challenge rankings showing details of all attempts that I have been informed of (not just the fastest!) It's interesting to see the progression as people learn the ins and outs and also the affect of the tides etc.

Easy Tiger!

Justine Curgenven (from Cackle TV) and Barry Shaw have added their names to the Menai Challenge rankings with top times. Barry now heads the table with his Valley Rapier 18 while Justine slots in a couple of places behind with her tidy run in the Valley Etain.

Fast boats?

Seem to be all the rage at the moment, following up on the success of the Rockpool Taran I hear rumours that 2 major UK sea kayak manufacturers are close to launching new fast kayaks. Imitation, flattery and all that!

More Freakin' Menai Challenge

Marcus Demuth, Aled Williams, Pascale and myself got out of bed early (Pete B didn't!) to take advantage of the 9.48m tide for another attempt on the Menai Challenge. New PBs all around, with Marcus taking top place on the rankings. But Pascale pulled out a flyer with some tidy lines pushing Marcus to the end. Aled took a sneaky line through the Swellies, however his persistence with the ski can't be rewarded with a ranking time unfortunately. All followed up with breakfast at the farm shop, a good start to the day.

Rockpool Kayaks Sponsor the Menai Challenge

Rockpool Kayaks have come on board as new sponsors for the Menai Challenge. Mike Webb has very generously offered a shiny new Rockpool kayak at a healthy discount - post a time and you never know, Daddy Christmas might just stuff 18ft of cutting edge plastic in your stocking!

The Outdoor Partnership

It's nice to see that the Outdoor Partnership have added a link to the Menai Challenge; take a look, they sum it all up better than me - Link.

Marcus Demuth - Tierra del Fuego presentation

World renowned expedition sea kayaker (and Menai Challenge paddler!) Marcus Demuth is giving a presentation on his Tierra del Fuego expedition at the Summit to Sea shop (London Road, Valley, Anglesey) on the evening of 10th September, meet at 18:30 for 19:00 start.

Freakin' Awesome!

"****, *****, I paddled so hard, I mean twice as hard as last time!"
"You were still 6 minutes slower though..."
"What?! That's not freakin' possible, I don't freakin' believe that, freakin' impossible, I mean I paddled sooo freakin' hard!!" etc.
"Anybody want to explain neap tides to Marcus then?"
Yes, Marcus returned to the Menai Challenge and it was a good turn out too - Pete, Pascale, Marcus, Aled and your truly - we even had Justine and Barry to wave us off! Good company for a good paddle. Of course a steady cruise degenerated into a real dust-up! Even with the perfect conditions the 7.0m tide was not good for top times but there was some applied paddling all the same - a pretty good night out! Pete's outlook on it - Blog

Dublin Bay Sea Kayak Race 2011

From Conor Murray the organiser:

Sunday 4th September 12:00

Bullock Harbour, Dalkey, Co Dublin

Last year we had 43 people turn out for the first Dublin Bay kayak race (in many years) and this year we hope to make the event one of the highlights of the Irish sea kayak racing calendar. So come along to this most historic part of Dublin Bay and circumnavigate Dalkey Island, where our Mesolithic ancestors once explored over 5300 years ago! The area is now home to some famous residents including 3 bottlenose dolphins!

The route will be the same as last year, with the Racing class taking in 3 laps of Dalkey Island covering 16.5km. The Touring Class will do 2 laps of Dalkey Island and will be 11km and the Novice and Sit-on category will be 3km in length.

Entry forms will be available on the day and registration will begin at 10:00

There will be food and refreshments afterwards, with prizes for all categories.

Entry fee: €20 singles €30 doubles

Hot Stuff!

Jim Wallis (Blog) picked up his brand new boat from the Rockpool factory and promptly set about the Menai Challenge. Unfortunately Jim was unlikely to set a new record as the weather gods did not look favourably, but he remained undaunted as he slogged away into a Force 6 (29 mph at Valley!) headwind for much of the distance. Unlucky but impressive! Jim may not yet be top of the rankings but he is prime candidate for the 'Menai Challenge Hard-man' award! 'Til next time Jim...

Marcus and the Menai Challenge

Marcus Demuth it seems is a glutton for punishment. But he has been away and done his homework, borrowed a nice shiny Valley Rapier 18 too and returned to the show the girls what he is made of! His latest time of 01:40:49 sets a new standard for the Menai Challenge and takes just over 7 minutes off the previous best set by Kate Duffus. Who thinks they can steal Marcus' crown??

North Reef Expedition Wrap Up

31st July 11

Lofoten Islands

Jann Engstad and Olly Sanders have made a successful crossing out to the remote island of Rost in the southern chain of the Arctic Lofoten Islands. This was accomplished over 3 days. The first part was crossing the infamous Moskenstraumen or Maelstrom out to the Island of Vaeroy. The second crossing was made from Vaeroy to Rost a total of 38km of open sea . They had mixed weather, with fog on the crossing to Vaeroy and a northerly wind and ocean swell out to Rost . Jann, a local guide of over 30 years, believes this is the first time this has been accomplished and has been a long standing ambition with the right team and weather. But for now he'll have to be content with completing it with Olly I suppose...

29th July 11

Isle of Wight Record - No messing about!

Yesterday Brendan Reese introduced himself to the Performance Sea Kayak scene with an impressive trip around the Isle of Wight. The time of 07:59 is impressive, even for a respected K1 paddler like Brendan. By knocking nearly 2 hrs off the previous K1 record (and taking a healthy 20 mins out of the fastest ski time!) Brendan has set the new standard. Not bad for a flatwater paddler!

Olly Up North

I hear that Olly Sanders has been poncing about somewhere 'up north' once again - not quite polar bear land this time but not far off I think. First crossings and all that I believe, details to follow...

27th July 11

Discretion etc...

The Shetland Bus boys (website) have unfortunately had to make the difficult decision to put on long term hold their attempt to cross to Norway. After all the training, prep and build up there's no doubt this is extremely disappointing for them. It it is easy to second guess such things, but at the end of the day the most important sea paddling skill is knowing when to go and when not too. This crossing is really pushing the boundaries of sea kayak paddling, but such a demanding and challenging undertaking is not something to be taken lightly at all - if there is any doubt then there isn't! There is always next time and I have no doubt the boys will be back...

25th July 11

Menai Challenge New Sponsor

Sea Kayaking Cornwall have very kindly offered to sponsor a 2 day course as a prize for the Menai Challenge.
Sea Kayaking Cornwall is run in Falmouth by Jeff Allen and Simon Osbourne, two of the UK's top sea kayakers. They offer coaching, instruction and guiding to all levels of sea paddler. Unforgettable Atlantic ocean adventures! A very generous offer gents, thanks a bundle!

Girl Power!

Now, I know that Kate Duffus has a competitive streak and I know she likes a challenge, so I was not surprised when she sent me a time for the Menai Challenge. Kate is an accomplished paddler so neither was I surprised when she sent me a time that topped the rankings, sneaking in 3 minutes ahead of Pascale Eichenmuller. But it was a little surprising to see that she had run the 20km course twice in one day! Kate mentions in her Blog that she realised there is more to the Challenge than just paddling hard...
It's good to see the top two places in the hands of the fairer sex. Who's next then?

22nd July 11

Or is it?

So, it looks like the Shetland Bus Route boys are up for a second attempt - would you expect otherwise? After looking at some of their kit issues and reviewing their clothing arrangements all they have to do now is to wait for some good weather. Looking at the website the guys are hoping for a gap in the weather at the start of the week - but I think luck will play a big part here; North Atlantic weather systems are difficult to forecast far ahead I fear. Good luck guys, may the wind fill your sails!

20th July 11

Game over

Well the boys from the 'Kayaks on the Shetland Bus Route' expedition have returned to dry land safely, good news. It seems a combination of poor weather conditions and some kit problems persuaded the guys to take the difficult but correct decision to turn and head for home. Not an easy decision to make at all, but always the right one if there is any doubt. There is always next time... Catch up on the latest, straight from the horses mouths so to speak: Kayaks on the Shetland Bus Route Take a listen to the podcasts at the bottom of the 'Track Our Progress' page.

19th July 11

Safe and Sound?

The details are still a little sketchy but it seems like the Kayaks on the Shetland Bus Route expedition may have succumbed to bad weather. The BBC are reporting that the boys have had to turn back; hopefully the guys are well, though I'm sure a little disappointed. It was a truly ambitious venture, one that would surely require almost perfect conditions - it doesn't sound as if they were fortunate enough to get those conditions - this time...

16th July 11

Celebrity Straits

Well, the first of the big hitters took to the water last night to attempt the Menai Challenge. Marcus Demuth (holder of the record for the fastest solo circumnav of the UK and accomplished exped paddler) went off hairy bears in his Valley Nordkapp. Marcus set a good pace and demonstrated his full grasp of the english language as he surfed through the dark into the finish. Pete Baars from Summit to Sea set off at a slightly steadier pace but his tidy lines through the Straits kept Marcus on his toes. Pete set the standard for the standard course(!) Good paddling gents! (Pascale is now getting to grips with her new role as Giant Slayer! - Warning - Grudge match looming!)

Menai Challenge

The Boss decided the weather window looked good, combining this with a sneaky route back through the Swellies popped her comfortably ahead on the Menai Challenge Rankings - give it a go, if you think you're hard enough!

Kayaks on the Shetland Bus Route

With only days to go until they set out for Norway, the boys are busy sorting kit and last minute arrangements. Take a look at their progress and sponsor them here - PSK page here.

8th July 11

More times posted on the Menai Challenge. The folks from ESUAS took a relaxed approach; plenty of time to gossip, take in the scenery and even a stop for a lunch. Nice one! Now, who's next?

3rd July 11

Well, the weather was good but the Eddystone Challenge was as usual a bit of a bruiser. Simon Dark and Richard Lewis from Bradford On Avon swapped their flatwater K2 for a double ski and broke the course record in the progress. Results to follow but John Bunyan has a good blog post that tells the tale. Also a few pics here. A good day out, but it does make your shoulders ache a bit!

Menai Challenge - first time up

And so Little Brother was the first to post a time for the Menai Challenge, and no faffing around either - straight in with a run of the Advanced course complete with a stonking SW wind too. Funny enough he set a new fastest time and moved into first place in the rankings! So, who's next then? Rankings

Three(?) kayaks on the Shetland Bus Route

I hear that Patrick Winterton and Mick Berwick are nicely clocking up the miles in anticipation of their attempt to cross to Norway. Not long to go now. I also hear that they've been putting ocean rower Olly Hicks through his paces as a potential team addition. It sounds as if Olly passed with flying colours, but then he does have somewhat of a pedigree - Olly Hicks

Nordkapp Odyssey

Jeff Allen is heading back to the UK from Norway after paddling another stage of his project to complete the Scandanavian coastline. Though, it sounds like there are tales to tell after a big day out just short of Nordkapp. To quote Jeff: 'Neptune decided to give me a lesson in humility'. I'm glad to hear all is well and I'm look forward to hearing more tales of derring do. Expedition Paddler Blog

Congestion

The various events around and about are drawing all sorts out of the wood work, good to see. But if we get any more boats training in the Straits we'll have to start a rota!

17th June 11

Menai Straits Challenge

Another paddling challenge in the Menai Straits (it's getting to be a busy place). This time an informal paddling time trial through the Swellies with ongoing results posted on the PSK site - Menai Challenge. So if you fancy a challenge and want to see your name in lights, challenge your paddling buddies, take a few scalps or just dodge the worst of the weather - then post a time... and then better it!

Level 5 coach James Stevenson of Adventure Elements pulled out a stealthy circumnavigation of Anglesey last week. Setting a time of 13:35 (Circumnavs) in an SKUK Explorer. This is one minute quicker than the time set by Barry Shaw a few years ago, sneaky. The ball's in your court Bazza!

Two kayaks on the Shetland Bus Route

I hear the intrepid (and possibly slightly mad) pair of Mick Berwick and Patrick Winterton have more plans afoot. After completing the first successful crossing to the Faroe Islands in 2009 it now seems that they have set their sights on making a crossing from the UK to Norway! After a quick look at Google Earth, it seems like a long, long way to me. Definitely not for the faint hearted - the best of luck! UK-Norway Crossing

Yet another DVD! - Around Ireland 2011

It seems to be the fashion to launch a sea kayak related DVD at the moment. Not to be outdone, it seems that Jeff Allen and Harry Whelan have teamed up with Vaughan Roberts (of Romany Productions) to produce one telling the tale of their record breaking lap of Ireland. Here's a taster: Video

23rd May 11

Scream if you want to go faster!

Well, this weekend the first Anglesey Ocean Kayak Race came to the Island. The race was run jointly by Open Adventure and James Stevenson of Adventure Elements. Poor weather conditions (30mph winds) forced a late change of venue to the Menai Straits but this arguably worked out for the better with a challenging course and some rip-roaring surfing along the way. The fastest boat on the day was Nigel Jones (Ski - Stellar Elite) from Notts Kayak Club with myself as first sea kayak (Rockpool Taran) and Justine Curgenven (Valley Etain) as first lady. Stuart Lynch and Fiona McBryde took the honours in the double class.  Results  Photos (AngleseyPaddling) Photos(Adventure Elements)

As the weather gods started to show their hands in the days prior to the race, things looked a little uncertain; perhaps a little more information running up to the event would have been useful. But on the day the race ran very smoothly. Perhaps the numbers took a bit of a hit with the weather, but we had centre coaches, GB team racers, TV celebs, some dodgy map reading, a well known ski-virgin and even an American Football star all on the water - what a mix!
Listening to people at the finish, there was a really good vibe in the (windy) air - it was all smiles and tales of endless surfs and what could have been - if only...

A mention must go to all involved with the timing, marshalling (both on and off the water) and the crews in the safety ribs - a very big thank you to all. Also a mention to Summit to Sea for sponsoring various prizes.

All in all it was an excellent and well run event, rather a hoot in fact. Well done to James Thurlow and James Stevenson for bringing it to Anglesey. Roll on the next one!

16th May 11

Done and Dusted...

Well it had all the makings of a true character building sea kayak expedition: constant headwinds, infected hands, ridiculous daily mileages, kit theft and the company of Harry Whelan to boot! Well done to Jeff Allen and Harry Whelan for completing the circumnavigation of Ireland in a fantastic 25 days - sleep well boys! Truly World Class paddling... Blog

14th May 11

Even more multimedia

After the news of the upcoming Kayak Essentials DVD I hear that another sea kayaking DVD is under development. This one aims to give the definitive ins and outs of Expedition Paddling and is authored by Olly Sanders and Nigel Robinson. Aimed at all levels from simple day trips to major multi-day expeds and with contributions from Nigel Dennis, Andy Stamp, Phil Eccles amongst others it sounds as if it should have an impressive pedigree! Due for release later in 2011 apparently.

13th May 11

Out of the woodwork

Well a number of people have been playing their cards pretty close, but despite the misinformation and evasive answers the truth always leaks out in the end! The lure of a new race along the Anglesey coastline has been too much to resist and it sounds to me like there are a number of 'names' (and a more of us mere mortals) appearing on the start list for next week's Anglesey Ocean Kayak Race. With paddlers local and from further afield: sea paddlers, flatwater racers, whitewater racers, tourers, slick ski boys and various odds, sods 'n' plodders it all sounds like it could be a rollicking day out. There are rumours that some have even bought new skis, and yes, have even been doing some of that training stuff in order to gain an extra edge - surely that's just not cricket!

Like buses...

New sea kayak races seem to be appearing thick and fast nowadays...
While looking at the Kayak Essentials website (they are launching a new instructional DVD of intermediate and advanced sea kayak skills) I noticed hidden away at the bottom of the page details of another Anglesey sea race.
Quote:
"Planned for the Autumn of 2011, the provisionally titled Extreme Sea Kayak Race promises to be a unique experience and will demand speed and rough water skills. Details will be released here in June 2011 - so watch this space!"
Intriguing...

8th May 11

Voodoo Dolls

While they took a weather induced rest day I managed to catch up with Harry and Jeff to hear about their exploits as they paddle Around Ireland. It sounds like a tale of sore hands and hard men to me; the conditions sound demanding at best and downright scary at times. Serious stuff. Jeff is also intrigued by some small gel cracks that have appeared in their boats overnight, he seems to think he can feel some negative voodoo vibes winging their way over the water from somewhere in North Wales. Who's staying up all night with the pins I wonder?

Anglesey Celebrity

I hear we have to welcome paddling celebrity Marcus Demuth to the UK as he moves into his new home on Anglesey. Marcus has a very impressive sea kayaking CV including a UK Circumnavigation, a circumnavigation of the Falkland Islands, a Tierra Del Fuego expedition and much more. Welcome Marcus, we look forward to seeing you on the water.

Anglesey Sea Symposium 2011

The 2011 symposium week has now drawn to a close. The strong E winds made life a little complicated for the coaches but it was good to see so many boats out on the water. Once again numbers were oversubscribed as sea kayaking seems to go from strength to strength - good stuff. The only thing that seemed a little disappointing was the limited displays by the various manufacturers - perhaps they all got invited to the Royal Wedding?

25 Apr 11

Walking on water

There are now two new Level 5 coaches based on Anglesey - congratulations to James Stevenson and Phil Clegg.

23 Apr 11

Around Ireland - Day 1

Well Harry and Jeff have firmly got the bit between their teeth on day one - over 40 miles clocked up! Not bad, but don't overdo it gents!

Summit to Sea - shop now open!

Well the grand opening finally happened! Shiny boats, fancy kit, beer, nibbles and a good turn out from the local paddling population made for a good do. It's still early days but it looks like just the thing that Anglesey needs from the paddling point of view. Once again, all the best to Pete and the S2S team.

21 Apr 11

Around Ireland 2011 underway

Jeff and Harry are now over in Ireland and about to start their attempt on the Ireland Circumnavigation. The best of luck! http://roundireland2011.blogspot.com/

Summit to Sea Grand Opening

Well I hear that the new Summit to Sea shop in Valley, Anglesey (opposite the police station) is due to open it's doors in time for the Easter Bank Holiday Weekend. Pete says there will be beer and mushroom vol-au-vents (nice combination) from 16:45 friday.

19 Apr 11

Just one more go

On recent form it seemed as if it wasn't too easy to get around the Island so I thought I'd give it a go:) It wasn't. But then a new record of 9hrs 54mins for the Anglesey Record made up for the pain!

Rockpool gives you wings

Rockpool Kayaks have now launched a range of wing paddles produced by Zastera Composites in the Czech Republic. Nice blades in a range of constructions and designs.

The Call of Nature

Well I hear that the Flying Finns have been on the island, hitting the races and clocking up the miles. I also hear that they've put their heads together with Olly Sanders to come up with an answer to the perenial problem of attending the call of nature whilst afloat. Uniquely it seems like a multi-sex solution to the old problem. Nice one!

Cross-dressing kayaker?

Hmmm, I'm not one to gossip of course, but...
Well I can't go into too much detail until the lawyer says so, but this is one scurrilous rumour that just won't go away. It seems that we have a local paddler who is into wearing ladies clothes as well as rubber...

Will Freya spoil the party?

I've been watching with interest the preparation of the boys for the upcoming Around Ireland 2011 exped. With only a few weeks to go it was especially disappointing to hear that Chris Millington had reluctantly decided to withdraw. I'm sure that the remaining members, Jeff Allen and Harry Whelan, can deliver the goods, weather allowing. That said, I hear a rumour that Freya Hoffmeister may be giving the team a few days head start and chasing them around - an interesting addition to the mix. I'd keep a good lookout over my shoulder if I were you boys!

Anglesey Ocean Kayak Race - 1 month to go

With only one month to go it's now time to get your entry in for the inaugral Anglesey Ocean Kayak Race - 22nd May. www.oceankayakrace.com/
The Oban Sea Kayak race set the standard last autumn but I'm confident that James Stevenson can deliver the goods. So if you fancy a visit to Anglesey and a bit of a challenge thrown into the bargain then enter now.

P&H launches new kayak - Aries

Closely following the launch of the Valley Etain, P&H are quickly out of the blocks with the new Aries. Looking like a composite version of the recent Delphin, it seems to bring a new slant to UK sea kayak design. Perhaps not the fastest boat out there but it looks like it could be a bit of a hoot in the rough. I wonder if they'll let me have a go? I'm starting to think that 2011 could be a good year on the new design front.
I can't help but think I've seen a few of those lines around and about though...

Summit to Sea - new paddle shop on Anglesey

I hear work is progressing steadily at the new Summit to Sea shop at Valley on Anglesey. With opening day looming, anticipation is rising amongst those looking to get their new-kit fix on the island. All the best to Pete Baars and the S2S Team.

Sarah Outen - London 2 London via the World

Sarah Outen has now set out on her intrepid attempt to kayak (Rockpool Alaw Bach), row and cycle around the world. You can follow her progress here: www.sarahouten.com/
The best of luck Sarah.

Anglesey Circumnavigation Attempts

My spies tell me of a couple of attempts on the Anglesey Circumnav record recently. Though the first attempt completed the distance (no mean feat!) with a new PB, heavy fog meant that the previous record still stands - unlucky. The second attempt just didn't quite work out - c'est la vie. Even so, it's good to see things hotting up so early in the season.
