Two, now Three kayaks on the Shetland Bus Route
Update 28/07/11: After an aborted attempt and a wait for a weather window that didn't materialise, the boys have decided to call it a day on their current attempt. Frustrating, but that's the way it goes. No doubt they will be back... Shetland Bus Website
Update: The guys have now been joined by adventurer and ocean rower Olly Hicks for their record breaking attempt.
In June 2009 Mick Berwick and Patrick Winterton were the first to make a successful crossing by kayak from Scotland to the Faroe Islands - a distance of over 400 km and including a 74 hr open crossing - truly Performance Sea Kayaking. Paddle Faroes Blog
Mick and Patrick are back in training with an aim to make a crossing of the northern end of the North Sea - if all goes well and weather allowing then they should be setting out in July of 2011.
The trip will start in Lerwick (Shetland Isles) and finish in Bergen (Norway); they plan to make overnight stops on East Lunna Voe and the Outer Skerries before making the 180 nm (~330 km) open crossing to Norway. Finishing off with a (relatively) short paddle to the finish in Bergen.
It should be pointed out that this crossing will be made using standard 'off the peg' sea kayaks with only a few modifications - a considerable (and probably slightly uncomfortable!) committment for 180 nm of open water.

Patrick has undertaken numerous open crossings and sea kayak expeditions and in a previous life competed at the Calgary Winter Olympics (cross country skiing).
Mick has competed in Canoe Slalom for more years than he would probably liked to be reminded of - on the way he took a British Championship title and represented his country in a number of International races.
Good luck Gents!
