Races

The 40 km Eddystone Challenge is a real bruiser, an offshore rowing /sea kayak race out to the Eddystone Lighthouse and back. The Coquet Round the Island race is at the oposite end of the spectrum at 2.5 m & 5.5 m - a friendly race that caters for all levels and abilities. The new Oban Sea Kayak race takes in a scenic and challenging 20 km course around the island of Kerrera.

The Seaquest races bring a twist with checkpoints to navigate, some on the water - some off - it can get muddy! The Ravenglass race takes the concept further with 3 estuaries to navigate in no particular order. Sneaky tidal planning can make a big difference! These events also run a Tour alongside the race with both being open to all forms of canoes and kayaks. Fun events - as serious as you make them.

Notes: Coquet Island lies 1 mile offshore from the small harbour of Amble on the beautiful coast of Northumberland. The race round the island involves a mile down the Coquet Estuary, through the pier ends, then across one mile of open sea to Coquet Island. ** The 2010 race was actually run up the river due to bad weather. Though George Oliver was awarded first prize for first sea kayak home, Francis Jones was actually first boat back in 34:03 paddling a Savage WWR.

Notes: 2011 - I'm still waiting to receive the 2011 results, in the meantime I've filled the gaps where I can. Of note is the results of Simon Dark and Richard Lewis who broke the 4hr barrier and the course record on their double ski. 2010 - The time for Elliot/Missen (Bradford on Avon CC) was truly impressive. A new record by far in quite choppy conditions. 2008 - race ran as Tamar Challenge due to bad weather. The Eddystone - always a challenge and usually a bit of an adventure - pop it into your diary for next year!

Notes: 2010 saw the inaugral Oban Sea Kayak race around the Isle of Kerrera, starting and finish in Oban Bay. A 50+ field made for some competitive racing over the 20km course with bouncy conditions at the bottom of the island. An well run, fun and friendly addition to the sea kayak calendar.

*Notes: denotes Solo entry in class** The 2011 event was delayed for bad weather and then run over a slightly shortened course. Once again an excellent fun event. The Ravenglass Seaquest involves a choice of optional checkpoints each with a differing points score, the more difficult checkpoints give higher points. Results are based on a combination of finish time and points obtained with penalty points being awarded for a finish outside of a target time. This results in many different and interesting strategies; an interesting and intriguing variation on racing - 84 starters in 2008, 98 in 2010. The event also raises money for local charities.
