{"id":6277,"date":"2022-05-31T15:26:51","date_gmt":"2022-05-31T14:26:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.performanceseakayak.co.uk\/Archive\/?p=6277"},"modified":"2022-05-31T15:27:14","modified_gmt":"2022-05-31T14:27:14","slug":"windy-squares","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.performanceseakayak.co.uk\/Archive\/windy-squares\/","title":{"rendered":"Windy Squares"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This was a training session we paddled at Broadford on the Isle of Skye as we waited for a gap in the weather for my Skye Circumnav attempt in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>As the wind was determined not to give us a break, we thought we might as well get into the spirit of things &#8211; it was time for Scottish (Windy) Squares.<\/p>\n<p>I like this session, it brings extra facets into a simple session:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Physical<\/strong> &#8211; it&#8217;s an interval session after all.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Technical<\/strong> &#8211; holding the lines in open water and making accurate turns throughout the wind.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Technique<\/strong> &#8211; matching the stroke rate and stroke technique to each of the different legs and keeping the boat &#8216;free&#8217; across wind. As the wind varies though 4 different angles.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Awareness<\/strong> &#8211; watching the drift and keeping the lines &#8216;square-on&#8217; (ish)<br \/>\nAnd all with free coaching from the wind throughout.<\/p>\n<h4>Format<\/h4>\n<p>The Intervals were 2&#8242; hard &#8211; 3&#8242; easy &#8211; broken into 1&#8242; sides i.e. a 90 degree turn every minute.<br \/>\nIf you work to an odd number of sides per rep, each hard effort is exposed to all different angles of the wind by sess end.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.performanceseakayak.co.uk\/Archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/squares.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6278\" src=\"https:\/\/www.performanceseakayak.co.uk\/Archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/squares.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1536\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.performanceseakayak.co.uk\/Archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/squares.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/www.performanceseakayak.co.uk\/Archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/squares-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.performanceseakayak.co.uk\/Archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/squares-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.performanceseakayak.co.uk\/Archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/squares-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.performanceseakayak.co.uk\/Archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/squares-1536x1152.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4>Options<\/h4>\n<p>This was a &#8216;trailing squares&#8217; sess &#8211; working directly &#8216;across sea&#8217; to expose the boat square-on across the conditions. Hence each square will fall downwind.<br \/>\nStatic Squares puts a &#8216;wind ferry angle&#8217; in so the squares stay roughly in the same area &#8211; you can play with a little jiggery-pokery on side lengths too to get it completely static if you want a little more thinking.<br \/>\nYou can also rotate the square through 45 degrees to work with the sea from each quarter instead.<\/p>\n<p>Windy Squares &#8211; turning a slog into a bit of technical fun.<\/p>\n<p>John Willacy<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This was a training session we paddled at Broadford on the Isle of Skye as we waited for a gap in the weather for my Skye Circumnav attempt in 2021.
