Great Island is the largest island in Cork Harbour, an extensive natural harbour on the south coast of the Republic of Ireland. The harbour provides shelter from the worst ravages of the Atlantic Ocean but a lap of the island still requires good planning as the narrow channels to the north dry.
While the natural harbour still has reminders of the heavy industries of the past - notably shipbuilding and steel production, it also is littered with impressive scenery and relaxing paddling spots. At 25 km around it's also just right for a longer TT!
Michael O'Farrell points out that paddlers have to negotiate a car ferry on the West side of the island that moves surprisingly fast.
