Lundy lies about 10 nm off the Devon coast and around 25 nm from South Wales. The granite outcrop is a regular destination for tourist boats and helicopter rides as visitors are attracted by the scenery, wildlife and history.
The relatively short crossing from Devon is a sea kayaker favourite but should not be underestimated, Lundy is exposed to the Atlantic swells and constantly swept by fast tidal flows as the Bristol Channel fills and empties. This is a frequent sea kayaking destination, many others have paddled it.

Note: Stop/start the watch at the Lundy end in Landing Bay as you pass to the WEST side of the ferry pier. Stop/start short and we will adjust your time.
Time from the beach/slipway at Hartland/Ilfracombe (etc) end.

Notes

Nick Arding (26-Jul-14)
Nick's time includes a return trip to Hartland Quay, a lap of the island and rather stylishly, a pint in the Marisco Tavern at the top of the hill on Lundy. A worthy challenge no doubt!

Glyn Brackenbury (02-Mar-13)
From Glynn:" I reckon I've got about another 15 mins in me, I hit the ebb stream as I got near the island which put the brakes on. I perhaps shouldn't of had the extra half hour in bed.... This could be a 2 hour target for the super quick boys. The return journey was painful, I ditched my wings and paddled back on my touring splits, 4 hours 25mins...... I didn't bother with a stopwatch on that one I think I could of timed myself with a sundial."

Glyn Brackenbury (02-Mar-13)
Same day return journey. No GPS on return.

Rupert Kirkwood / ? Austen (2008)
Possibly the first crossing by sit-on top kayaks?

Rupert Kirkwood / ? Austen (2008)
Possibly the second crossing by sit-on top kayaks?

Nigel Lang (17-Sep-22)
No GPS record.

Nigel Lang (19-Sep-22)
No GPS record.

Joe Leach (05-May-12)
Day 4 of GB Circumnavigation. No GPS.

Michal Madera (20-Jul-13)
This time Michal started from Lee Bay, gambling that this longer route would benefit from better tidal assistance than the shorter leg from Hartland Quay.

Natalie Maderova / Michal Madera (07-May-2012)
Part of GB Circumnavigation

Olly Sanders (May-2008)
Also paddled the return to Woolacombe.

John Willacy (17-Jun-12)
Day 66 of GB Circumnavigation

John Willacy (04-Sep-13)
04-Sep-13 02:29:19 -- Via Hartland Point. - Also timed as 02:01:46 taken at Barley Bay (shortest route): for interest only - Barley Bay not eligible for a time under 'Walk-in' rule.
