Arnside: The Bottom-Hugging Bore
The tidal bore at Arnside is a feature that draws a crowd, in order to witness the sands become submerged in a silty instant.
It isn’t the biggest of waves, in fact it is not a big wave at all. However the factor here that challenges a long-run, is not hydraulic power, but almost the opposite. The water here is only inches deep for much of the run.
At Arnside the rudder blade leaves a gouge in the sand, and correction strokes become more relevant to building sand-castles than to boat handling.
The Arnside Bore – small, sneaky and sort of silly really. But good fun. It’s a great way to polish your bottom.
